Known as the City Beautiful, Orlando is so much more than the world’s most popular vacation destination. Our city’s true strength lies in its resilience and strong sense of community. After this summer’s senseless mass shooting, our hearts were heavier than we could have imagined, but we came together to offer our support and stand in solidarity with those most closely affected by the tragedy. We’re a community that doesn’t give up; a city and group of people with the strength and resilience to overcome inequity and injustice.
Orlando is also a rich economic and cultural hub for central Florida. Striving to provide the talent to continue the economic innovation and growth of our city, Orange County Public Schools has a laser-like focus on student achievement and expanding opportunities for the students they serve. The 11th largest district in the country and the fourth largest in Florida, they have been recognized for the progress they’ve made towards expanding educational opportunity for students in their schools. Even so, 60 percent of eighth graders living in poverty in the district are not considered proficient in reading.
But with the support of the community, strong strategic leadership from the district, and relentless work of many dedicated organizations including Teach For America, we can make a world-class education a reality for all students in Orlando.
